Put the minced
beef in a bowl with half of the onions, garlic, spices and salt. Stir well
and then bind the mixture together with the beaten egg. Divide the minced
beef mixture into 12 equal portions and, using your hands, shape each one
into a small ball.
Heat the oil in
a heavy-based saucepan until it is very hot. Add the meatballs in batches
and deep-fry for 5 minutes. Remove and drain on absorbent kitchen paper
and then set aside.
Heat the ghee
or vegetable oil in a large saucepan, add the remaining onions and garlic
and fry gently for 4-5 minutes until soft. Add the remaining spices and
salt and fry for 3 minutes, stirring constantly.
Add the
meatballs and coat them in the spices. Add the measured water and bring to
the boil. Lower the heat and simmer gently for 30 minutes. Serve garnished
with mint or coriander leaves.

party, make the meatballs in advance and keep them covered in the
refrigerator until you are ready to cook.
